At dawn on 15 October 2002, the morning of the celebration
dinner, we visited the Korean National Cemetery (Dongzak Dong in Korean).
This cemetery holds Korea's war dead just as does our own Arlington National
Cemetery.

The graves of "The Ten Heroes". At the beginning of the Korean War
communist tanks invading South Korea were opposed by South Korean soldiers who
did not have the proper weapons to destroy tanks. These ten Korean
soldiers, led by a Sergeant who was posthumously promoted to Lieutenant, charged
the enemy tanks with nothing but hand grenades and gave their lives to destroy
and stop them. The Lieutenant's tombstone is the last one at the end of
this line of stones and is raised slightly above the others. The resulting
explosions obliterated their bodies leaving them to be remembered by nothing
more than these tombstones.
